My mother moved to Huntington Beach in her late 60s, seeking closeness with my sister but having little community of her own. On our calls, when I asked how she was, she'd often say, "It’s just another day in paradise." At the time, I thought she was speaking with sarcasm, given her solitude and endless work.
When we lost her at 70, the grief was profound—a shattering loss many of us endured during the already tumultuous times of Covid. Seeking solace and connection, I moved into her home by the ocean to be near my sister. In those moments of profound sadness, I gained a new perspective. Every day became a testament to gratitude, not just for her memory, but for the life she had unknowingly shaped around me. Or did she know?
To honor her, we filled her service with Birds of Paradise— a bold, vibrant flower that, alongside the Stargazer Lily, she cherished. Each time I encountered these flowers in California, they stood as a testament to her beauty, resilience, and wisdom. They were a gentle reminder of her presence, comforting and guiding me as I healed from such devastating loss.
Surrounded by the ocean's embrace and the nurturing landscape, I began to understand her words. Each day truly became another day in paradise, filled with unexpected comfort, peace, and growth. This painting is a tribute to my extraordinary mother, J—a celebration of her life and the serene paradise she has left in her wake.
